By August 2025, the most important skill in crypto isn’t learning a new programming language or finding the next speculative token. It’s understanding how to design and play economic games. Every protocol is a live arena where thousands of rational actors - traders, validators, builders, whales - make daily decisions based not just on market conditions, but on what they think others will do. Those decisions, in turn, change the rules for everyone else.
Game theory isn’t just an academic curiosity here. It’s the operating system beneath the surface of restaking economies, Layer-2 alliances, liquidity wars, governance standoffs, and token designs. If you’re a founder, you’re a game designer whether you admit it or not. If you’re an investor, your portfolio is only as strong as your ability to read these games and predict where the equilibrium will settle.
Restaking: Ethereum Security as a Multiplayer Strategy Game
When EigenLayer launched, it didn’t just add another staking option to Ethereum - it changed the security model into a multi-sided marketplace. Restaking lets Ethereum validators secure not only the base chain, but additional services called Actively Validated Services (AVSs). The pitch is simple: stakers can “rent out” their trust to other protocols in exchange for additional yield. In practice, it’s a complex coordination game.
The rewards are tempting, especially for AVSs offering high early yields to attract security quickly. But the risk is equally clear: if an operator misbehaves on any AVS, the slashing penalties can burn not only their stake, but also the delegated ETH of everyone who trusted them. This creates a structure similar to the prisoner’s dilemma. Everyone benefits most when all operators behave honestly. But a single defection - taking a one-off gain from dishonest activity can hurt everyone involved. The difference here is that the game is repeated and the punishments are harsh enough to make long-term cooperation the rational choice.
EigenLayer’s double opt-in delegation process adds another layer of strategy. Stakers have to choose operators carefully, weighing reputation, track record, and risk tolerance. Operators have to decide which AVSs to support, balancing yield against the possibility of cascading slashing events. This is not a static system - new AVSs enter the market, yields change, and governance proposals can adjust risk parameters. Every participant is playing with incomplete information about everyone else’s future moves. That’s why, for founders building in or on top of restaking, the challenge is not only about technical integration. It’s about designing incentives that make “cooperate” the dominant strategy over the long term, even when greed or panic might push players toward defection.
Layer-2s: War, Alliance, and the Shared Sequencer Dilemma
The competition between Ethereum’s major Layer-2s - Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base is one of the clearest examples of overlapping games in crypto today. On one level, it’s a straightforward race for TVL, developer mindshare, and user activity. Each network has its own incentives, governance, and branding, and each wants to be the default home for DeFi, NFTs, and new dApps.
But on another level, there’s a growing recognition that pure zero-sum competition wastes resources. Optimism’s “Superchain” model, where member chains agree to common technical standards and share a portion of sequencer revenue with the collective, is an explicit attempt to turn rivals into collaborators. The theory is simple: if multiple chains align their incentives, they can pool liquidity, fund shared infrastructure, and market themselves as a unified network. The game shifts from a fight over slices of the pie to one where the pie itself gets bigger.
Not every coordination problem is so neatly solved. One of the most pressing is sequencer decentralization. Right now, most L2s run a single sequencer that controls the order of transactions - a glaring centralization point. All players understand that moving to a decentralized or shared sequencer system would strengthen the ecosystem’s credibility and resilience. But for each individual chain, making that change comes with costs: technical complexity, potential throughput trade-offs, and the loss of fee capture. The result is a classic “everyone should, but no one wants to go first” dynamic. Shared sequencer projects like Espresso and Astria are promising, but until a critical mass of L2s commit, the incentives for any one to delay remain strong.
For founders choosing where to build, this L2 landscape matters. Joining an aligned network like the Superchain can give access to shared liquidity and infrastructure, but it also means accepting collective governance and revenue-sharing rules. For investors, the key question is which equilibrium will dominate: siloed competition for fees, or broader alliances that trade individual control for network effects.
Tokenomics: Designing the Rules of the Game
In 2025, tokenomics has matured beyond the speculative excess of the ICO era. Founders now understand, sometimes through painful experience, that a token is not just a fundraising tool. It’s the rulebook for a market. The supply schedule, reward mechanisms, burn policies, and governance rights all combine to define what strategies are profitable for participants.
The best designs create positive feedback loops. Ethereum’s EIP-1559 fee burn ties network usage directly to token scarcity, aligning holders’ incentives with growth. “Real yield” models, where stakers earn a share of actual protocol revenue, turn token holding into a long-term cooperative play. Vote-escrow models reward locking tokens for governance, shifting farmer behavior from quick extraction to sustained participation.
Poorly designed tokens, by contrast, invite destructive strategies. Excessive emissions encourage mercenary farming and dumping. Governance tokens with no value capture attract apathetic voters or opportunists who will push through self-serving proposals. Reward systems that can be easily gamed like NFT marketplace tokens that rewarded volume without filtering out wash trades almost guarantee exploitation.
The core question for any founder is: what game am I creating? In that game, is the most profitable move also the move that strengthens the protocol? If not, the market will find and exploit the gap. For investors, this is the due diligence beyond tech and narrative, mapping out the game tree of a token’s incentives to see whether its equilibrium leads to growth or decay.
Live Games in the Market Right Now
You don’t have to look far in 2025 to see game theory in motion. Optimism’s Superchain is a coordination game in progress, testing whether revenue-sharing can keep multiple chains aligned. MEV extraction remains a prisoner’s dilemma where no one can unilaterally stop without losing out to competitors. Liquid staking centralization is a repeated coordination problem, slowly improving as social norms and viable alternatives draw stake away from dominant providers. Protocol fee switches, especially in DeFi, are games of chicken, no one wants to be the first to charge users and risk losing them to a free rival. And airdrop farming is an ongoing arms race between protocols trying to reward genuine participation and sybil farmers trying to simulate it.
It’s a living example of how incentives shape outcomes, often more decisively than technical features.
The Playbook
If you’re building, design for positive-sum outcomes where individual profit depends on collective health. Anticipate the bad equilibria, the outcomes where rational behavior would hurt your protocol and adjust the rules to make those moves unattractive. Use repeated-game structures like vesting, retroactive rewards, and social reputation to keep participants invested over time. Keep your incentive systems simple enough that players can see and believe the link between their actions and their payoffs.
If you’re investing, read past the whitepaper and roadmap. Ask yourself: in this protocol’s game, what’s the dominant strategy for each type of participant? Is it to contribute, hold, and build or to extract, exploit, and exit? The answer will tell you more about the long-term value than any narrative.
Crypto is not a neutral playing field. It’s a constantly shifting set of games with different rules, payoffs, and players. The winners, both founders and investors - will be those who can see the board clearly, design the right games, and play them better than anyone else.
